2008 Gulf Coast Hurricane Summary

  • On July 23, 2008, Hurricane Dolly (Category 2) reached the Texas coast near Brownsville. In the past 100 years, this part of Texas has had only two Category 2 hurricanes.
  • On September 1, 2008, Hurricane Gustav (Category 3) reached the Lousiana coast just west of New Orleans.
  • On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike (Category 2) made landfall at Galveston Island, Texas, and caused damage throughout the entire Greater Houston region.

    This chart provides data on the length of coastlines for various regions in the U.S., primarily Gulf Coast states. Texas has the third highest tidal shoreline and the data shows that Texas also has the highest number of major hurricanes and is second highest in total hurricanes. The Gulf Coast has the third longest coastline in the U.S. The data for the analyses was obtained from various reports on U.S. coastlines and National Hurricane Center database.
